Hotel housekeeping duties, roles and department structure

A duty list is only useful if it maps to a person and to minutes. This breaks the housekeeping department into its roles, assigns every recurring duty to one of them, separates the daily work from the periodic work that quietly eats a shift, and shows how the whole list becomes a headcount.

Short answer

Hotel housekeeping owns guest room cleaning, public and back-of-house areas, linen and laundry, amenity and supply control, inspection and quality, lost and found, and deep-clean programmes — plus reporting room status to the front desk. The work is split across an executive housekeeper, supervisors or inspectors, room attendants, housemen, public-area attendants and laundry attendants, with small properties combining roles.

Daily duties

These recur every single day and belong in the base staffing model.

  • Morning briefing, assignment distribution, key and cart issue.
  • Departure cleans, stayover services and same-day change rooms.
  • Room inspection and release to the front desk.
  • Corridor, elevator lobby and service-area cleaning.
  • Public area cleaning on the published rotation.
  • Linen collection, laundry processing and floor-closet restock.
  • Amenity and chemical restock; cart breakdown at shift close.
  • Maintenance defect reporting and out-of-order tracking.
  • Lost and found logging and secure storage.
  • Room status reconciliation with the front office at shift end.

Periodic duties (the ones that break a plan)

Periodic work is where unplanned overtime is manufactured. Each item below needs a scheduled slot and its own minutes in the plan, not goodwill at the end of a shift.

The staffing calculator has an explicit deep-clean line for exactly this reason: it keeps periodic work visible in the day’s minutes instead of absorbing it silently.

From duty list to headcount

Four steps convert the lists above into people:

  1. Price each room type in minutes (cleaning time ranges).
  2. Sum the day’s room minutes and divide by productive minutes per shift (the staffing formula).
  3. Layer supervisors, housemen and public-area hours on the ratios above.
  4. Price the result and check it against revenue (cost per occupied room).

If laundry is on premise, cost it separately — it has its own labor, utility and linen replacement curve. Start with the hotel laundry cost calculator.
