Housekeeping supervisor job description and duties
The supervisor role is where a housekeeping plan either holds or quietly falls apart: the person who balances assignments at 8am, inspects at noon, and answers for finish time at 3pm. This is the full duty list plus the part that decides headcount — how much inspection your policy actually creates.

Copy-ready job description
Position: Housekeeping Supervisor (Floor Supervisor / Room Inspector)
Reports to: Executive Housekeeper / Director of Housekeeping · Supervises: room attendants and housemen on assigned floors
Position summary
Plan, assign and supervise the daily cleaning of guest rooms and public areas on assigned floors, inspect completed rooms against the property standard, and release clean rooms to the front desk within the agreed turnaround so occupancy is never delayed by housekeeping.
Key responsibilities
- Review the day’s arrivals, departures, stayovers, VIPs and out-of-order rooms before the briefing.
- Assign and balance rooms so credit reflects real workload — suites and deep cleans distributed, not dumped.
- Conduct the morning briefing: priorities, VIP rooms, safety, standards focus.
- Inspect completed rooms against the written standard; record scores and issue re-cleans where required.
- Update and release room status so the front desk can sell inspected rooms.
- Coach attendants on repeat misses; document training and performance conversations.
- Escalate maintenance defects and safety hazards; track out-of-order rooms to return.
- Control floor linen, amenity and chemical stock; report shortages early.
- Monitor progress against the plan and flag overtime risk to the executive housekeeper before it happens.
- Handle guest requests, service refusals and lost and found per property procedure.
Requirements
- One to three years as a room attendant or equivalent hotel cleaning role.
- Working knowledge of the property standard and inspection criteria.
- Comfortable with PMS or housekeeping status systems and daily boards.
- Able to give direct, respectful quality feedback across a diverse team.
- Physically able to walk floors and inspect rooms for the full shift.
How inspection policy sets supervisor headcount
Supervisor headcount is not a preference, it is arithmetic once you fix the inspection policy and the window rooms must be released in.
| Policy | Rooms inspected | At 6 min each | Supervisors for 180 departures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every departure inspected | 180 | 1,080 min | About 4 in a 5-hour window |
| Departures + VIP only (60%) | 108 | 648 min | About 2–3 |
| Spot check 30% | 54 | 324 min | About 1–2 |
| New-hire rooms only | Varies | Varies | 1 plus coverage |
The illustration above assumes a 5-hour inspection window and six minutes of inspection and travel per room; substitute your own timings. The point is that a full-inspection policy is a staffing decision with a price tag, not a quality slogan. Model both the attendants and the supervisors together in the staffing calculator and price the difference in the housekeeping cost per occupied room calculator.
What to manage the role against
| Metric | What it tells you | Where to compute it |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms released by target time | Whether housekeeping is holding up arrivals | Daily board finish time |
| Re-clean rate | Whether the standard is trained or just enforced | Inspection log |
| Minutes per room cleaned vs standard | Whether the plan's minutes are honest | productivity calculator |
| Hours variance vs plan | Whether assignments were balanced | productivity calculator |
| Housekeeping cost per occupied room | Whether the supervision ratio is affordable | CPOR calculator |
Definitions for each of these live in housekeeping productivity metrics.
Career path and adjacent roles
The common ladder runs room attendant → supervisor or inspector → assistant executive housekeeper → executive housekeeper → director of rooms. Two adjacent roles are frequently confused with the supervisor:
- Houseman / house attendant — supports the floor rather than supervising it; see department duties.
- Room attendant — the role being supervised; see the room attendant job description.
Put this to work
Find out what your inspection policy costs
Model attendants, inspectors and housemen together against tomorrow's real room mix, then see the finish time and cost per occupied room the supervision ratio produces.
Free to run, no account needed. An account keeps each property’s minutes, wages and daily boards so tomorrow’s plan starts from yesterday’s actuals.
