How HotelWorkload calculates housekeeping labor
Every formula this site uses, where each default value comes from, and the specific conditions under which each output stops being reliable.

Short answer
Every calculator here is arithmetic on inputs you supply, not a proprietary model. Cleaning workload is summed in minutes by room type, divided by productive minutes per attendant shift, and rounded up to whole people. No default value on this site is presented as an industry standard, because service level, room size, brand standard and building layout move every one of them.
The core staffing formula
The staffing calculator runs four steps in order:
- Workload. (departures × departure minutes) + (stayovers × stayover minutes) + (suites × suite minutes) + (deep cleans × deep-clean minutes) + public-area minutes. No-service rooms contribute zero cleaning minutes.
- Productive minutes per attendant. (shift length in hours × 60) − paid break minutes − non-cleaning allowance such as cart set-up, briefing and linen runs.
- Headcount. workload ÷ productive minutes, rounded up, then multiplied by (1 + absence buffer) and rounded up again. Inspectors and housemen are derived from their own ratios against rooms cleaned rather than being a fixed share of attendants.
- Cost. hours × wage, with hours above the overtime threshold priced at the overtime multiplier, plus any benefit load percentage you enter. Cost per occupied room divides total labor cost by occupied rooms, not by rooms cleaned.

Where each default value comes from
Defaults exist so the form is not empty on first load. They are starting points, not targets, and the tool tells you so at the point of input.

Laundry and linen formulas
- Pounds per occupied room (PPOR) = total pounds processed ÷ occupied rooms for the same period.
- Pounds per operator hour (PPOH) = total pounds processed ÷ total laundry labor hours, including sorting and folding.
- Cost per pound = (labor + utilities + chemicals + linen replacement + equipment amortisation) ÷ pounds processed. Excluding any of those five makes an in-house rate look artificially cheap against an outsourced quote.
- Par level = rooms × items per room × par count.
Stated limits
- Outputs are estimates. They do not encode break law, overtime law, predictive scheduling rules or union agreements in any jurisdiction.
- Rounding is upward at the headcount step, so small properties see a large percentage jump when workload crosses a shift boundary. That is real, not a rounding artefact.
- The model assumes attendants are interchangeable across room types. Where a property assigns a dedicated suite attendant, plan that person separately.
- Travel time between floors and buildings is only captured through the non-cleaning allowance. Sprawling or multi-building properties should raise it.
- Cost per occupied room is a labor figure unless you are using the full CPOR tool, which adds laundry, guest supplies and fixed rooms cost.
How this page is maintained
Formulas change only when the underlying calculator changes, and the reviewed date on each guide moves only on a real edit — nothing on this site auto-stamps a fresh date to look current. If a formula here does not match what a calculator does, that is a bug worth reporting to [email protected].
